Our day at the Oxprentice event on the 18th November see earlier blog was a great success as along with me and Steve Cook from Purple Frog we also had 3 members of the G&D team Marcus, Tom and Juri and Irene Donaldson from Nestle as mentors and judges for the day. We had 5 teams all researching and preparing flavours and putting together marketing plans which we were able to advise them on during the day.

Judging was based on the suitability of the flavour chosen both with regards making it and also how it fitted in with the current G&D brand. We also assessed the marketing the teams were proposing for their limited budget and considered how suitable it was and also whether the concept behind the flavour enabled further flavours to be developed going forward.

All the entrants were good and some fantastic flavours were thought of but the 2 who progressed through to the final were White Chocolate & Gingerbread and Jaffaholic. The judging was completed by 5pm (Wednesday) and the winning teams only had until Friday at 12 noon to get their marketing strategy underway and operational as the boys at G&D’s were going straight into production and would have the 13 tubs of each flavour in the store by then.

Talk about fast production!! And to see how it was done see the video below

As promised the ice cream was available to buy in all cafes at 12pm and I was one of the first to try at Cowley and both flavours were absolutely brilliant and were a credit to the skill of the ice cream makers. The way they had blended the “bits” into both flavours added to the experience and made both of them special.

The event was running until close of business on Monday and was very close run contest with Jaffaholic winning by half a tub and overtaking Gingerbread on the last afternoon.

So congratulations to Suzanne and Ushma the winning team members.

Topics covered included the meat content, McDonald’s horror stories – such as fingernails [...]
